#AtoZChallenge I is for Aunt Isabel

Image
In a Nutshell: Aunt Isabel is the aunt of the main characters in Fiona Ingram's The Secret of the Sacred Scarab. She's an experienced world-traveling journalist on the trail of something interesting that just happens to get her nephews (Justin and Adam) into a lot of trouble. It's been too long since I read it for me to pull out a favorite quote, so instead, I'm just going to share my review of the book from January 2015. And it makes a nice reminder that I'm overdue to read the second in the series!   Click the cover for purchase link. Title: The Secret of the Sacred Scarab Author: Fiona Ingram Publisher: iUniverse 2008, 272 pages Source: I'm actually not sure; it's been on my ereader for quite a while. I either won it in a give-away or picked it up on a free day, I think. This fast-paced adventure is by one of my fellow BookElves .  Publisher's Summary: A thrilling adventure for two young boys, whose fun trip to Egypt turns into a dangerously e

#AtoZChallenge #HisFor ...Halitor the Hero

Image
H is for Halitor the Hero In a Nutshell: Halitor is a hero-in-training who has a terrible tendency to be klutzy. Biggest Secret: He is scared to death of girls, known to him as Fair Maidens. They make him especially clumsy. Favorite line: " The Hero's Guide to Battles, Rescues, and the Slaying of Monsters say so." Doesn't matter what's going on, Halitor expects it to match the instructions in his textbook. A Fair Maiden who breaks all the rules. A Hero who fails everything by the book. It'll be the adventure of a lifetime...if they live past breakfast! Publisher's Blurb: Halitor has failed at every apprenticeship under the Ice Castle. He figures it’s his last chance when his parents foist him on Bovrell the Bold as an apprentice Hero, and he pores eagerly over the Hero’s Guide to Battles, Rescues and the Slaying of Monsters. But Halitor infuriates his master when he drops his sword and gets rattled around Fair Maidens. When his master abandons

#AtoZChallenge #GisFor ...Gorg the Troll

Image
G is for Gorg Following the suggestion of fellow blogger and amazing author Jemima Pett, I'm doing a very simple A to Z with characters from my writing and the books of my author friends! I'm just posting a brief profile, sometimes a quote, and the book cover with links. Though you may also see some of my typical reviews (when I feature other peoples’ books) and the usual Friday Flash Fiction. In a nutshell:  Gorg is, well, a troll. He's a living pile of rock and a leader among trolls in the Vegetative Kingdom ruled by King Celery the Halfwit. He's also smarter than the average troll, especially after an encounter with a misguided human wizard. His biggest secret:  Gorg is terrified of deep water. Stones sink. Favorite quote: "Gorg gave the innkeeper a blank look—all too easy when one’s face is made of stone." Gorg doesn't have his own book yet...only a very rough draft of one.  But I'm going to do my flash fiction for the week (yeah, it's Satur

#AtoZChallenge #FisFor ... Fred

F is for King Fred of Castle Marsh Here's the skinny on King Fred: In a nutshell: one-time princeling who became a king by a set of curious chances.   He may believe in democracy, but its philosophy's not all he thinks it is Biggest secret: While castles obey him in times of need, Fred will never be deposed. Favourite line: This one's from an interview Fred did with author Jemima Pett. It sums him up so well--smart and precise but humble. “No, it’s really The Castle In The Marsh, but we let people call us Castle Marsh because otherwise it seems so pedantic.” I have reviewed most (all?) of the Princelings books as they came out. Here are links to those that feature Fred and his twin, George: Princelings of the East The Princelings and the Pirates The Princelings and the Lost City Since there are so many books, follow this link to Jemima's Amazon page for purchases, and get ready to enjoy the Princelings! And now for a special treat, I am re-r

From an early age, she has known she didn’t want to be 'normal'. She wants a life full of challenge and adventure that will break her from the stereotype of the times. Biggest Secret: While her mind is full of great dreams, her biggest secret is that she's still figuring out the detail. Whatever she ends up doing, it will be something that makes a difference. I haven't reviewed these books myself, but I will direct you to this review by

Following the suggestion of fellow blogger and amazing author Jemima Pett, I'm doing a very simple A to Z with characters from my writing and the books of my author friends! I'm just posting a brief profile, sometimes a quote, and the book cover with links. Though you may also see some of my typical reviews and the usual Friday Flash Fiction. D is for Dolores In a nutshell: Spunky and level-headed member of the Viridian System team, keen to better her situation. Biggest secret: Per the auth or : Her big secret is that she appears to be hankering after a baby even though she thinks she’s infertile.  Well, hankering after Pete’s baby, to be specific. ( Ms. Pett's comment o n this rev elation: "Is that a big secret?  It surprised me.") Favourite line: Lars, Pete, Maggie and Dolores are travelling in alien space and have encountered a spacecraft apparently crewed entirely by females.  "Why don't you guys make tea or something?” Dolores suggests, a

#AtoZChallenge C is for Crazy Jake Jenkins

Following the suggestion of fellow blogger and amazing author Jemima Pett, I'm doing a very simple A to Z with characters from my writing and the books of my author friends! Though you may also see some of my typical reviews (when I feature other peoples’ books) and the usual Friday Flash Fiction. C is for Crazy Jake Jenkins In a nutshell: Crazy Jake and his buddy Wild Harry Colson are  trouble personified. They get a bit straightened out when the Ninja Librarian comes to town, but even he can't fix their propensity for getting into trouble. Biggest secret: After years of mocking students and harassing teachers and librarians, Jake has a yen to learn to read. Favorite saying: "Oops." (He doesn't actually say this in the books, but he's that sort. You can bet he's spent his life saying it). The series is The Ninja Librarian, with three books, suitable for ages 8 or 9 an
