IWSG: Welcome, 2023

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time - and return comments. This group is all about connecting!

Let’s rock the neurotic writing world!

Our Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and hashtag is #IWSG

The awesome co-hosts for the January 4 posting of the IWSG are Jemima Pett, Debs Carey, Kim Lajevardi, Sarah Foster, Natalie Aguirre, and T. Powell Coltrin!

Every month, our wonderful leaders announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

January 4 question - Do you have a word of the year? Is there one word that sums up what you need to work on or change in the coming year? What is your word for 2023? Why?

It may be completely telling that I had a thought about this when I first read the prompt, and now can't remember what it was. The word probably ought to be "publish." As in, finish the new novel(s) and get them out there. Keep writing and submitting short stories, because I won't get any of them published if I don't submit them.

Maybe the word is "finish." Finish stories, finish novels, finish the little things I need to do to my new house. Finish editing photos (well, that's a non-starter, as I always create more photos to edit, but I can try to finish each trip in a timely manner).

I don't want to get totally carried away with ambition, though. Because another word I need in my life is "peace." And probably "organization," because having plans and a tidy space both reduce stress, which makes for more peace.

Realistically, the word I can be pretty sure is in there somewhere is... chocolate.

How about you? What's your one word? Or, if you are like me, your three (or four) words?

A (summer) sunrise to start your year off right!

  1. Of course, chocolate must be in there somewhere. I was able to choose one word but I really like all of yours. Happy New Year!

  2. Good idea to have more than one! From the visits I've made so far, it looks like many of us are having trouble with finishing things, focusing on things, and getting things achieved. If we all finish those things we've been meanong to, watch out world!
Chocolate is not on my list. Neither is air. :D

  4. I tend to pick a word and not write it down then completely forget it. Maybe mine should be airhead. LOL

    1. Okay, that made me laugh! If I don't write things down--*everything* --I forget it. Of course, finding all the places I've written important stuff is another challenge.

    2. Also--I can't seem to comment on your blog, which is sad, because I want to offer support for your great job of thinking things through!

  6. "Peace" and "organization" sound like the perfect words for 2023 in order to help you publish and finish. :)

    1. I think those two really do sum up what's need in all aspects of my life--and what I find hardest to achieve.

  7. Finish is a perfect word for motivating you to get on with those projects and see them through to the end. Good word, indeed. Happy New Year.

  9. My word as I discuss it at my blog is focus and so concentrating more on on only select projects and not too many projects at one time. Another change I need to make is get more organised and strategicised so I can get my books out more quickly.

    1. Focus is something I could definitely use more of. I've never been good at it, and life has made it even harder to attain.

  10. Chocolate - LOL!

Finish is good as that is something you can control more than say publish.

    1. Yes, that was what I decided! though some of what I need to finish is self-published, so I do have control over that. But in that case, publishing isn't the hard part, finishing the book to where I'm willing to publish is.

  11. Yep Rebecca, Margaret Attwood always gave the advice - 'Finish the novel.' It's amazing how many authors don't. but we can relate for sure. So many other demands on our time.

Happy 2023. I hope you finish everything you wish to finish. And I hope to see you at WEP for our Year of Movies! Very excited about these prompts!
