Chukkhung Ri

Day 9: To Chukkhung

From Dinboche to Chukkhung was a short day, so we were able to do some explorations after arriving (and lunch, of course). Short or not, it was also our highest point to date--the little hotel village of Chukkhung is higher than Ama Dablam base camp!

We headed out about 8:30, as usual, up the Imja Khola river valley. We didn't try for really early starts because overnight temperatures were just too cold--with our reasonable days, it made more sense to wait for the sun in most places.

The amount of ice on the river tells you that even the days are getting cold!

After lunch, we headed up the trail towards Island Peak Basecamp, though with no intention of going far.

We had all turned around by the time an hour was up. It was cold and windy, despite the sunshine!

Day 10: Chukkhung Ri
 
We headed out as soon as the sun hit to climb Chukkhung Ri, which at 18,253' is the highest altitude I've experienced!

 We left part of the group at the saddle. Seven of us (5 client and 2 guides) headed for the summit.

Looking the other way, we realized there's a huge glacial meltwater lake (Imja Tsho) at the head of the Imja valley.

 The only thing wrong with our climb of Chukkhung Ri was that we didn't carry our lunch. Despite snacks, by the time I got back to the lodge for lunch about 2 for my lunch, I was not in a good place. Still, I flew down the mountain, only about 20 minutes behind my son!

Despite the late lunch, I greatly enjoyed my dinner at the usual time, after a very short outing to shoot the sunset.

    I love the moonlight photo- caught the stars - my camera can’t.
